| I've had a headache for 7 days now. I've been to the doctor, gotten meds, but not gotten much better. Not sure what's up, but it looks like another visit to the doctor will happen on my birthday if things don't drastically improve this weekend... bummer.

| | Currently Watching Little Miss Sunshine By Abigail Breslin, Greg Kinnear, Paul Dano, Alan Arkin, Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Marc Turtletaub, Jill Talley, Brenda Canela, Julio Oscar Mechoso, Chuck Loring, Justin Shilton, Gordon Thomson, Steven Christopher Parker, Bryan Cranston, John Walcutt, Paula Newsome, Dean Norris, Beth Grant, Wallace Langham see related | We watched Little Miss Sunshine last night. Apart from the deplorable language, one of the main messages about suffering was well made. You should see it. It's funny. Of course, it has Steve Carell, who plays "Michael" in the TV sitcom The Office, which we watch with friends every now and then. In the movie Steve Carell plays Frank.
Dwayne:
I wish I could just sleep until I was eighteen and skip all this crap-high school and everything-just skip it.
Frank:
You know Marcel Proust?
Dwayne:
He's the guy you teach.
Frank:
Yeah. French writer. Total loser. Never had a real job. Unrequited love
affairs. Gay. Spent 20 years writing a book almost no one reads. But
he's also probably the greatest writer since Shakespeare. Anyway, he
uh... he gets down to the end of his life, and he looks back and
decides that all those years he suffered, Those were the best years of
his life, 'cause they made him who he was. All those years he was
happy? You know, total waste. Didn't learn a thing. So, if you sleep
until you're 18... Ah, think of the suffering you're gonna miss. I mean
high school? High school-those are your prime suffering years. You
don't get better suffering than that.
Embrace your suffering and become who you're meant to be.

| So, did my last note not tout the excellent performance of Mr. Whitaker? I hear he won a Grammy for Best Actor. I did not watch the Grammy's, of course. We don't do much TV at our house - by choice.
Please pray for Rocky's dad. His CT scan revealed cancerous lesions in his lungs and possibly in his liver. We would have preferred that his cough was just from walking pneumonia, but we don't get to choose.
K- if you're not a Christian you won't get this part, but if you are read on. May God, who is sovereign in ALL things be glorified in life and illness. Nobody is mad, nobody is cursing or yelling "why!?!" Instead we cry "Praise God!" who works all things for our good and his glory (because we believe that his son came to earth, died for our sins, and rose again - conquering death forever). You see, EVERYTHING is about God's glory. He's in charge whether you, me, or we, like it or not. He is God. He does what he wants when he wants. The sooner a person 'gets' that the easier it is to handle the ups and downs of life. Total control of our destiny does not belong to us. As for me, I relinquish all control of my life to the One who created everything. I admonish you to figure that out before God has to teach it to you by taking away everything you depend on. If you resist him he will take drastic measures to get you to your lowest point. Then all you can do is look up and cry out to him! So many people who claim to be christians still try to be in charge of their own lives. They believe the verses in the Bible that they want to believe and ignore the ones they don't like. Uh, Sorry! It doesn't work that way! It's all or nothing folks. It's not a buffet. You can't pick and choose. It's ALL or NOTHING. As for me, my God is BIG, no, HUGE, no, INCOMPREHENSIBLE. Let me introduce you to my God. I do not have a weak god that makes suggestions for my life, or a wimpy god who asks me what I want in life. My God is NOT my copilot! He is my pilot, my captain, my father... in total control, and because of that I can sleep without fear or worry - ever.

| | Currently Watching The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio By Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson, Laura Dern, Trevor Morgan, Ellary Porterfield, Simon Reynolds, Mont Gagn, Robert Clark (II), Michael Seater, Erik Knudsen, Jake Scott, Jordan Todosey, Ryan Price, Shae Norris, Abigail Falle, Luca Barbaro, Brando Barbaro, Jack Murray (XII), Evan Rose, Jessica Pollock see related | The Last King of Scotland was a very, um, enlightening, movie. I won't recommend it to everyone, but I will recommend it to anyone who thinks you can rationally have peace talks with radical, sadistic dictators. Forest Whitaker was fantastic.
News: Susan left for France on Wednesday, January 24th and will return March 22nd. Parting is such sweet sorrow.
Rocky's grandmother passed away on January 16th. We travelled to Bryan, OH for the funeral. We flew in to the Detroit aiport, rented a car and drove down through Toledo past Defiance, and into Napoleon to stay with Rocky's aunt. The trip was slightly snowy, but actually very enjoyable - as far as those sort of trips go. The highlight for me was getting to briefly visit my aunt, cousins, and their kids before driving back to Detroit.
Duncan went on a LONG walk with us today around my old elementary school. He liked pretending that we were lost in the woods and thinking that he was helping us to find civilization again... I got some really good pictures of him being "outdoorsy." His invisible fence training is going well. He got his first static shock today and yelped a little. I felt it, and it's not that bad, just uncomfortable. He's passed out now - busy day.
The kittens are ridiculously adorable. Tabby plays fetch with her toy mice. It really is the cutest thing when she gets the mouse and brings it right back to you to throw it again. Dinah is not really so bright, but she makes up for that in cuteness. She curls up on my lap almost every evening around dinner and falls asleep in the most contorted uncomfortable positions. It's precious. No human child could ever be this cute. I must lower my expectations.
Time to help make dinner :)
